The Jane Goodall Hike for Hope is an invitation for everyone around the world to honor late scientist and conservationist Dr. Jane Goodall by committing to spending time outdoors on the anniversary of her passing, this October 3-4.

You can participate by finding a Hike for Hope happening near you, organizing your own Hike for Hope, or simply getting outside and enjoying the natural world!

How to Participate

Everyone Is Welcome

The Jane Goodall Hike for Hope is for everyone. Whether you’re a seasoned outdoor enthusiast, a commuter in a bustling city, or suburbanite simply looking for a moment of connection with nature, you can participate in the way that works best for you. There is no required distance, pace, or activity. What matters is taking part and sharing in a collective commitment to hope and positive action.

When you participate in the Jane Goodall Hike for Hope, you’re helping turn inspiration into action by raising awareness for Jane Goodall Institute’s work to protect wildlife and habitats, empower local communities, inspire young people through Roots & Shoots, and advance conservation solutions that create a better future for all.

As people across the U.S. and around the world come together on the same weekend, we’ll demonstrate a belief that Dr. Jane shared throughout her life: every individual can make a difference, and together we can create lasting change.

The Jane Goodall Hike for Hope is a global, grassroots movement that commemorates the anniversary of Dr. Jane Goodall’s passing with hikes, walks, and time spent outdoors. Everyone is invited to find or join a Hike for Hope happening in their area, or to host their own Hike for Hope, during the weekend of October 3 and 4.
Jane Goodall’s Roots & Shoots Basecamps will be hosting events in select U.S. cities, and grassroots Hike for Hope events will take place around the world. People are invited to organize and host their own events, which can be found on our central Hike for Hope calendar. In keeping with Jane’s philosophy that any individual can make a difference, any individual can participate in a way that is meaningful for them.
Anyone can participate! If you are under 18 years old, please ask a parent or legal guardian before you join or host a Hike for Hope.
The official Hike for Hope weekend takes place on Saturday, October 3rd and Sunday, October 4th, 2026. You can choose whichever day works best for you — or participate on both days! If you are unable to hike that weekend, you are welcome to participate on a different day that fits your schedule. Every step still supports Dr. Jane Goodall's mission, and your impact absolutely counts.
This is a flexible, self-directed in-person hiking event. Participants are encouraged to get outdoors in their own community. There is no central or official group hike location.
Jane Goodall’s Hike for Hope is a global movement hosted by the Jane Goodall Institute’s many offices around the world. In some countries, the event is part of a larger fundraiser, however in the U.S., participants are encouraged to take part by getting out in nature and sharing their hikes with JGI over social media by tagging #hikeforhopeUSA @janegoodallinst. Participants are also welcome to donate to JGI, but its not required to participate.
